Ken Gillie, Lead: One
of Illinois' fine young barbershop voices, Ken Gillie is a software
engineer for Motorola and a developing wine connoisseur in his spare
time. He and his wife Cathy had their first child, Cayliann, on
10/11/03 and their second child Kaedin
on 2/25/06. He joined SPEBSQSA and the Chicagoland West Suburban
chapter (a.k.a. The West Towns Chorus) in 1995. As a member of
Murphy's Boys, a popular comedy quartet that finished in the top ten
in district competition, he began to relish quartet singing. Ken
joined forces with George and Mark in the fall of 2000 and the 3 of
them went in search of a tenor for this exciting new group. With the
addition of Rick later that fall, the present foursome was underway.
Initially they were known as West Towns Sound, for their first
public appearance on the Sunday Morning Bozo Show, and finally,
Alchemy.
Rick Anthoney, Tenor: Rick Anthoney, as tenor
of the group, rides the sonic waves created by the other three guys.
And he's been doing that since 1974 when he joined the Lombard
chapter and, soon after, his first registered quartet, The Corkers.
Since then, he's sung with numerous quartets, among them: Saturday's
Heroes, Chicago Express, Friends (with Mark), Classic Ring, Reunited
(with Mark), Short Term Agreement (with Mark), Chicago Nights and
Bravo! Most of these foursomes competed at the International level,
and once, Rick even managed to be in a top ten quartet. Alchemy, his
first-ever chapter quartet, tops them all. His great joy and good
luck is to have sung and be singing with other wonderful voices. By
day, he's a legal editor who loves camping, canoeing, being Kara's
and Amy's dad and writing poetry in his stolen moments.
Mark Keever, Baritone: What can you safely say
about a baritone? Mark Keever is our quintessential entertainer:
singer, actor, musician and Alchemy's go-to guy on questions related
to chord structure and chord worshipping. He joined the South Cook
chapter at age 12 to sing with his dad and was nurtured in early
quartets. In high school, it was the Junior Edition; later he sang
with his brother in Windfall and in Illinois District Champion
quartets, Friends and Genuine Craft. His lifelong love of
barbershopping has not kept him from reaching out to other musical
forms. Mark presently sings with his lovely wife Lynda as one half
of the renowned mixed quartet, Rendezvous. His son and three
daughters have always been avid fans of his chosen hobby. Mark also
plays several stringed instruments (usually not at the same time,
though).
George Sotos, Bass: Mr. Bass Man, George Sotos,
wasn't always a bass singer. He's sung all three other parts in
quartets over the years. By a happy coincidence, he finally landed
the part he likes best in Alchemy. A long-time member of The Harmony
Society, he transferred to the West Towns Chorus in 2000 but
continued, for a time, to direct the Chicago Metro chapter's chorus
while already busy as bass section leader and assistant director at
West Towns. In real life, this highly regarded attorney was recently
made a judge amid acclamation from his peers. He is a devoted dad to
his two wonderful and talented daughters, Mary and Margaret. That he
is also a cooking and baking whiz in his "off" hours is
testament to his unflagging energy and rich Greek heritage. Previous
quartets include United Airwaves (tenor), Return to Harmony (lead)
& Speed of Sound (bari).
